first issues of Colloquium from 1967
Some fun in the archives today. Earlier this year I became editor of Colloquium: The Australian and New Zealand Theological Review. The journal began life in Aotearoa New Zealand at St John’s College, Auckland. It was initially called The New Zealand Theological Review but was renamed Colloquium in 1967 for the “mutual benefit” of theological study in Australia as well as New Zealand.
All the articles are online through ATLA/EBSCO database. But there’s nothing quite like leafing through paper printed in 1967. Since copies of all the issues of Colloquium are housed at Uare Taoka o Hākena, Hocken Collections here in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, earlier this week I ordered the first four volumes from storage, so that I could take a browse.
The first issue included an article on the Māori church in Auckland, while another early issue included an article on the church in PNG. The first words by a woman appeared in 1971 in the form of a poem by published poet, Helen Shaw.
In October 1968, Melburnian EF Osborn (professor of New Testament and Early Church History at Queen’s College, University of Melbourne) was announced as the Associate Editor alongside the New Zealand based Editor, Raymond Foster, who at that time was Warden of St John’s College, Auckland.
